Big Fish to Charter in Antarctica

About two months ago, I introduced you to Big Fish, a 147-foot expedition motoryacht that just launched from the McMullen and Wing shipyard and that is scheduled to begin offering charters in Tahiti this July.
Now comes word from management company 37 South that the owner plans to move the yacht to Antarctica in December, and to offer charters there through March 2011.
This is big news in the crewed yacht charter industry. So few high-quality yachts ever go to Antarctica that the destination can seem almost impossible to book. I'm reminded of this tale from broker Liz Howard at Fraser Yachts Worldwide, who had to work for two years to secure a high-quality yacht for a charter client wanting to visit Antarctica. She calls it her "most challenging charter," seeing as how she had to research virtually every element from scratch. Not even the big management companies had the information she needed on file.
Indeed, a brand-new expedition yacht heading into Antarctica's waters is noteworthy. 37 South tells me that bookings are being accepted now, with only the four-month window for reservation dates before the yacht will move again in spring 2011. Any reputable charter broker can help you make an inquiry.
